Keith the Critic Movie Reviews

Are you ready for some new reviews?  Well, don't worry.  We have you covered.

Love Simon

Up and coming actor Nick Robinson plays the role of Simon Spier. Simon is a teen-aged boy in Atlanta living with his close-knit family. He loves the same things as most teenagers, but he has one big secret. , He's gay and no one knows, including his mother, Emily, who is played by Jennifer Garner, and his father, Jack, who is played by Josh Duhamel.

When his best friend, Leah, played by Katherine Langford, tells Simon about an anonymous online post of a student from their high school admitting he's gay, Simon feels some relief. He reaches out to the unknown poster, who has identified himself as Blue. Simon shares things with Blue that he has not told anyone, not even Leah or his other friends, Nick and Abby. Jacques, as Simon calls himself, sets out to find the identity of Blue.

Martin, one of Simon's classmates, is an awkward teen and discovers Simon's emails. Simon will do anything to keep Martin from leaking his secret.

This story is so well told and fitting for the times. It was brilliantly directed and the script is outstanding. It hits on a touchy subject and does so with aplomb. I believe that no one should be afraid to be themselves and this movie does a tremendous job of showing the struggles of a young boy trying to come to terms with his life.

Anyone 13 or older should see this film. I saw it twice and loved it both times. The actors are outstanding. Nick Robinson, Jennifer Garner, Josh Duhamel and the entire cast contributed to this tremendous film. The movie sets an example of acceptance and the actors conveyed this message fantastically.

I gave this movie 4 out of 4 stars.

Midnight Sun

This movie is the story of young Katie Price who suffers from a rare disease known as XP in which exposure to sunlight may be fatal. Katie, who is played by Bella Thorne, lives with her dad, Jack, in their Washington home. As a young girl Katie would look out her window as the other children walked by. Her mother died when she was young. Her dad, who is played by Rob Riggle, must be her protector along with her friend, Morgan, who is played by Quinn Shephard.

One night Katie heads to the train station to sing and play her guitar for the travelers. There she meets Charlie, who is played by Patrick Schwarzenegger. She has watched and adored Charlie from her window and runs home when he tries to talk with her leaving behind her journal. Quinn finds that Charlie has the journal and tells Charlie where Katie lives. A budding romance begins but Charlie doesn't know Katie's secret. She just wants to feel normal.

I knew very little of this disease until this movie and had no idea how horrible id could be. The story did show worst case but did a good job of conveying the seriousness of the illness. The first 15 minutes were quite slow, but when it finally got going, I enjoyed it. Bella Thorne, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Rob Riggle, and Quinn Shephard were all great, especially Rob Riggle in a serious role. This movie will appeal to women and teen-aged girls especially but I enjoyed it too.

I gave it 3 out of 4 stars.

A Wrinkle in Time

This fantasy movie introduces child actors Storm Reid as Meg Murry and her brother Charles Wallace, who is played by Deric McCabe. Meg's life is in shambles when her father, who she idolizes, disappears. She now finds herself always in trouble. She and her father, Alex, who is played by Chris Pine, were always working together on some science project.

One day Charles Wallace introduces Meg to Mrs. Whatsit, who is played by Reece Witherspoon. She is joined by Mrs. Who (Mindy Kaling) and Mrs. Which, played by Oprah Winfrey. The three are astral space travelers and believe that Meg and Charlie Wallace's father has tessered into space and is now in another universe. The tesseract was a type of space-travel that Alex has been working on.

The group along with Meg's friend, Calvin, who is played by Levi Miller, leave earth to search for Alex on the planet Uriel. They soon discover that a horrible creature known as The It, who represents the nasty characteristics of people, holds their father captive.

This movie has beautiful sets and is fantastic in 3D. The script is well written and has a great moral to the story. Director Ava DuVernay did a great job with character development and payed close attention to detail. Oprah Winfrey, Mindy Kaling, Reece Witherspoon, Chris Pine, and the child actors were all great. The costumes of the three Mrs. were amazing.

I was captivated and drawn into this movie. The whole film is visually spectacular. I gave it 3 out of 4 stars. Take the whole family. Not all critics agree with me, but I think you'll enjoy.
