2014 Marvel Announcements!

Earlier today Marvel made some HUGE announcements regarding their movies coming out over the next five years at the Disney El Capitan Theater.  Scrounging the interwebz, we have converged some of the biggest bits of news for your consumption right here!

One big deal about this event was that it was when Marvel made these announcements first.  First to FANS, not investors.  They feel that this is a justice to those that actually watch the films, and become fans.  They don't want to cater to those that only look at the bottom dollar.  That is a wonderful perspective, considering it is the ticket sales that encourage Marvel to continually churn out great films.

So, what are the Phase III films announced?

  • Captain America 3: Civil War – May 6, 2016
  • Doctor Strange – November 4, 2016
  • Guardians of the Galaxy 2 – May 5, 2017
  • Thor: Ragnorok – July 28, 2017
  • Black Panther – November 3, 2017
  • Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 – May 4, 2018
  • Captain Marvel – July 6, 2018
  • Inhumans – November 2, 2018
  • Avengers: Infinity War Part 2 - May 3, 2019
That is an impressive list of films coming out over the next few years!  And this list doesn't even include what comes next year.

Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. appeared on stage for the Captain America 3 film.  It appears that rumors were flying around that the subtitle would have been Serpent Society, but was officially announced as "Civil War".  With both Evans and Downey Jr. on stage together, it basically confirms that Iron Man will have an impact in the third Captain America film as speculated before across the internet.

For those not familiar, the "Civil War" plot revolves around how the U.S. government establishes a "Superhero Registration Act" that forces all superheros to register, and then act as "police offices".  Captain America opposed the act, where as Tony Stark was in favor of it.  Interestingly, there are high profile characters involved in the storyline that are currently licensed to other movie companies, such as Spider-Man being a Sony property.  Don't forget a month ago that Sony and Disney/Marvel were in talks about the Spider-Man franchise, so it is possible to see a version of Spider-Man appear, but not the Sony Quicksilver.

As for the lead for Black Panther, Chad Boseman has been picked to play the part.

The third Avengers film will be split into two parts, as you can see in the bullet list above.  Sounds like a HUGE story line in plans for that one, considering the speculation has been that each major "relic" from the various films are Infinity Gems that make up the Infinity Gauntlet.  Thanos will inevitably be the villain for those films.  So being split up like this...makes a LOT of sense.  I dare expect Agents of SHIELD to have a major story line between the two films to fill in gaps over the year.

Regarding Thor: Ragnarok, we will see some spill over from Avengers 2 having effects to Thor and Loki's story.  Of course, do not forget that Loki (spoiler?) has taken on appearance of Odin, ruling Asgard.  So, it will be interesting to see how the events of Avengers 2 impacts those issues.

The last bit of awesomeness to cover...Benedict Cumberbatch will be playing Doctor Strange!  How flippin' cool is that?
