Shannara On Schedule For MTV 2014

MTV has up right ordered Terry Brooks' fantasy "Shannara" series to season.

The Shannara series of fantasy novels have been going since 1977 starting with The Sword of Shannara as the introductory story.  MTV, however, is going to start with book two in the series, The Elfstones of Shannara.  The understanding behind this is due to the "high adventure" quality of the second book more akin to that of Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones caliber style of storytelling.

Terry Brooks' franchise of novels have always met a mixture of criticism either praising it, or ostracizing it.  Positive criticism tends to come from how Terry Brooks manages to mix contemporary "High Fantasy" with technology into strong storytelling over long archs.  Negative criticism tends to come from arguments regarding lack of inventiveness, or originality in his concepts and plots.

How MTV intends the franchise will be interesting, as a majority of their television shows are geared towards angsty teen and young adult audiences.  Miles Millar and Al Gough, of Smallville on the CW, will be the showrunners.  Jon Favreau will be producing.  Jan Favreau was lined up to direct the pilot episode, but due to scheduling conflicts, and to step down and take up the mantel of producer.  Jonathan Liebesman, of this summers Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, will be directing the first episode.

A premiere date has not yet been established, but the season pick up is slated for 10 full episodes.
